The Liebester Award #2

I’m nominated..again! Thank you to the coolest ever Alex @ The Scribe Owl. I said this once and I’m saying this again: check out her blog! She’s a sucker for fiction and a haven for everything YA.

Alex’s questions were so much fun to answer, I’ll admit some were brain turners! But I wouldn’t expect anything less 😂 There’s no such thing as boring with Alex.

Rules

▪️ Thank the blogger who nominated you and link back to their blog.

▪️ Answer the 11 questions asked of you.

▪️ Nominate 11 bloggers.

▪️ Ask your nominees 11 questions.

Alex’s Questions

Say you and some friends were planning a heist. Which would you be: the mastermind behind it all, the slippery spy, the muscle, the distraction, the sharpshooter, or that one person in the wrong place at the wrong time who dies? (Or if you’ve read Six of Crows tell me which of the gang you’d be)

I love heist books and movies, I get so excited and it’s one of the easiest ways to swoop me into the story. If I would choose, I’d be the mastermind aka Kaz Brekker. I love plans and planning, so that would be my strong point.

What I’d never be is the slippery spy, I’m one of the most clumsiest people alive.

Floppy or perky eared dogs? Why?

Tbh I never cared because I’m not a dog person 😂 I guess I’d go for perky eared dogs, they look cute!

If you were going to a masquerade ball and your mask reflected your personality, what would it look like?

Oooohhh okay so I always imagined I’d go to this magnificent ball wearing a striking gown at this beautiful magical palace. Here’s the mask I would wear:

I would change the blues and mix in a bit of pinks and blush, I want to evoke the idea of dawn rather than the night sky. I’m a massive daydreamer and sunrise is one of the most beautiful times of the day. So the squares remind me of glass ceilings with soft sunlight peaking through. The rest of the mask has a feather like design which is a great match to my spirit animal: the owl!

A masquerade mask is not finished with a bit of glitter here and there for added dramatics.

Would you rather eradicate COVID-19 or global warming? (Note: If you chose global warming then COVID will never be cured and if you chose COVID global warming will never be fixed)

Well technically COVID does have a vaccine so I’m hoping that would be cured and eradicated hence I’m going with global warming.

Would you rather walk on your hands upside down in a handstand or walk on your hands and knees for the rest of your life?

I can’t handle staying upside down for a long time. The headaches that I’ll get! So I’m walking on my hands and knees. At least I won’t have to read everything upside down.

What do you want most (except books ) for Christmas/Hanukkah/any other winter gift-giving holiday you celebrate?

Even though I don’t celebrate any winter holidays, a gift I would love to receive are boardgames. I’m obsessed with them. One of my best friends and I have promised to learn D&D for this year.

Would you rather go to a fancy ball or country shindig? Why?

Fancy ball all the way! Let me dress it up with my gown, jewels, and….my hidden dagger 😉

If you were one of the twelve main Greek gods/goddesses, who would you most likely be?

I know people find him obnoxious mostly, but I’d most likely be Apollo. Mainly because his main representations include music and artistry, let’s not forget he represents the sun as well and I’m definitely on team day.

Puffer coats or fluffy coats? Why?

Fluffy coats. They’re so soft and warm!

If you could only use hand sanitizer or soap and water exclusively forever, which would you chose?

Soap and water. They’re more effective I think, and if I’d choose one I would want the option of washing my hands.

Which of the five food groups is your favorite (dairy, carbs, fruit, veggies, or protein)?

Chocolate? Is that a mix of carbs and dairy? 😂

TTT| Top Bookish Mantras to Live by in the New Year

New Year New Me!? Maybe…?

Bookish wise I haven’t really committed to reading as I’ve done the past year, especially after I started my blog and found so many books and posts that got me excited to read more!

But it’s easy to get sucked in and lose yourself to blogging and talking about books, being pressured to read certain books over others, and to order ARCS. The last thing I want is for something I love so dearly to turn into something I resent.

With that in mind here are bookish mantras I would like to commit to this year!

TTT is a fun bookish weekly meme created by theartsyreadergirl where you list your top 10s based on a different theme each week. I’ll link up her TTT if you would like to participate or know more.

Top 10 Bookish Mantras to Live by in the New Year

Never hate yourself for not loving a hyped book.

You don’t have to have a Netgalley account if you don’t want to.

Read books that you feel like reading rather than books you feel you must read.

It’s okay if you still haven’t read the classics.

It’s even more okay if you love fantasy over classic lit.

Take as much breaks as you need to, your books and blog are always here for you.

Don’t hate yourself for DNF-ing a book.

It’s okay to write a negative review. An opinion is still valid regardless.

If you’d rather watch Netflix or binge watch Youtube vids today, it’s okay, your books will still be there for you.

You can read YA books even if you’re not a teen.

Hopefully this year will be kinder to us all. What are your mantras for this year?

This week’s TTT is all about sharing our most anticipated releases for the first half of 2021. I’ll limit this post to the first three months because let’s be honest I already have enough trouble remembering this month’s releases let alone the first half of 2021 😂

My Fav Books of 2020

Roman and Jewel by Dana L. Davis

This makes the musical in me dance! Theatre kids with a star crossed romance, dazzling!

Concrete Rose by Angie Thomas

I’m pretty confident I’ll love this one since THUG was one of the best books I’ve read in 2020.

Clues to the Universe by Christina Li

This is one of those cute/sad, giving you the blues type of book but I love the synopsis.

Cast in Firelight by Dana Swift

Political intrigue and arranged marriage – enemies – reluctant allies – catching feelings – lovers trope. Now that is what I’m talking about.

The Project by Courtney Summers

I’m getting major creepy vibes and the cover is giving me Stranger Things so yes I’m pretty excited for this.

Teen Titans: Beast Boy Loves Raven by Kami Garcia

A welcome book to the new year. I need some sweet and lighthearted romance from one of my favs OTPs.

The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner

A secret apothecary that specializes in making poisons for abusive husbands…sold.

Yolk by Mary H.K Choi

I haven’t read anything from Choi before but I’m betting this will be a really intriguing read.

American Betiya by Anuradha D. Rajurkar

It’s a star crossed, multi cultural romance with coming of age themes and the war many of us face between honoring family or following our personal wishes.

Rule of Wolves by Leigh Bardugo

I aim to devour this just like I’m about to devour the tv show on April.

Honorable Mentions

Happy New Year! | A (Apprehensive Welcome to 2021)

Happy New Year Everybody!

As much I was would like to celebrate I am truthfully having a more apprehensive feel to the upcoming year of 2021. It hasn’t been an easy year (that’s an understatement) and I don’t believe everything will magically disappear just because it’s 2021, but I do believe in hope and the human survival spirit. If you’re reading this than congrats you made it. I’m so proud of you.

Bookish wise I’m super excited to see where this year takes the NEC, it’s only been a few months but this community saved me. So thank you, thank you so much for giving this semi introvert bookworm a space for her to rant and gush about her books and bookish things ❤️ 📚

I won’t keep this long! I just wanted to give ya’ll a warm hug and I hope you have a great year bookish wise or otherwise!

I made some templates for you guys to use and share! You’ve got a chance to share with your followers or friends your reading goals for 2021. If you’re stumped with blog tours or readathon, I’ve made this cute and simplified organizers where you can note down the important details of your upcoming blog tour and readathon, at the same time you can share them too!

I hope you guys love them, you can tag me @jawahir the bookworm or #jawahirthebookworm. Feel free to use them however you like 😊 ❤️

Before I end off this post, I’ve come across wonderful other start of the year posts that I found super helpful so check them out!

There you have it! I hope you guys are starting this year as strong as it can be despite the ongoing circumstances, show these bloggers some love and show this little blogger some love 🙈 ❤️

TTT | My Fav Books of 2020

2020 is almost over!

The books mentioned are not in any particular order.

My Fav Books of 2020

The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang

I’m in the middle of reading the last book of the series The Burning God, and I’m swept away by the dark yet engrossing landscape Kuang has visualized for us. Kuang is also one of my favorite discovered authors this year!

IIluminae Series by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

Easily the most unique series I’ve ever read in terms of writing and format. This is such a polarizing book because of that, and to me the gamble was worth it. I loved this series!

The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab

Arguably repetitive at some points however you can’t deny that Schwab’s has one of the most beautiful lyrical writing. I was swept away with the characters and ambiance she has written in the book. If you loved Addie La Rue, check my original playlist inspired by it 😊

The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman

This is the book that got me out of a reading slump. It’s witty sarcastic dialogue mixed in with plot twisting murders has made this such a delightful read! Book 2 is set to release in 2021 and I can’t wait!

Spoiler Alert by Olivia Dade

One of the best romance novels I’ve ever read!

A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson

Another winner due to it’s writing style and format. I was completely engrossed in the story that I practically finished the book in almost a day.

The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas

My longest book turned out to be my favorite classic. I’m so annoyed I haven’t read Alexandre Dumas’s books sooner, his excitement pours into his writing. And you can’t help but get swept up by all the dramatics and adventure!

Lore Olympus by Rachel Smythe

My first webtoon ever, and I’m very happy with the choice because it’s an amazing modern retelling of Hades and Persephone. And the art style? Stunning!

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

One of the most impactful reads this year, Thomas writes an agonizing coming of age fiction novel that is not so far from real life. A must read for sure.

The Serpent King by Jeff Zetner

This book just made my heart weep. It’s such a profound coming of age novel that’s uplifting as much as it is saddening. If you liked Eliza and Her Monsters, you’ll love this one.

Thanks for reading! Have you read any of these books? Did you end up with great reads this year!?

F.R.I.E.N.D.S Readathon | My First Readathon of 2021!

New year means starting a new readathon! Whether you want to join in more readathons or take this slow, or even going solo reading, this is your reminder to do you and do what makes you comfortable reading wise.

Right! So F.R.I.E.N.D.S is my favorite tv show, it never fails to make me laugh and is the only show capable of fixing my bad mood or stressful day. So when the powers of book twitter bought this readathon announcement on my timeline I was fangirling. HARD.

This is literally a match made in heaven.

The readathon is created by Tyra and the Books, and I’ll link up her video and the official twitter account of the FRIENDS readathon so you can check it out!

Mainly the prompts are based on iconic quotes said by the main characters. You have the choice to mix and match between characters or decide to only do one character.

There are extra fun challenges that are optional called “Life challenges” which includes watching episodes or seasons of the tv show. OR recreating a meal from the show! (I’m doing Phoebe’s famous oatmeal cookies taken from Anna @Books, Baking, and Blogging , and I might order an extra large pizza Joey style 😉)

I’m really hoping I’ll enjoy this one, and I couldn’t have started 2021 on a more positive note!

Prompts

Since I literally cherish all of these characters (Ross maybe less), I decided to do one prompt under each character. If other prompts fit the book chosen I’ll add them up and this way I get to cross out more prompts 😊

The quotes I’ve decided to go with:

  • Rachel: “He’s so pretty I want to cry” – Read a beautiful book
  • Monica: “I’m breezy!” – Read whatever you want
  • Chandler: “I’m hopeless and awkward and desperate for love”. – Read a book with a romance.
  • Phoebe: “Sweet lord this is what evil must take like.” – Read a book with a villain.
  • Joey: “Is this friendship? I think so!” – Read a book with a friendship.
  • Ross: “Unagi”. – Read a name that you misname or pronounce incorrectly. (Settings and characters are accepted).

TBR

For Rachael’s quote I went with my illumicrate edition of Spinning Silver, it’s absolutely gorgeous with foiled detailing, sprayed edges, and a special slip in bookcase! Worth crying over lol.

Ross’s pick includes me butchering setting names in A Curse so Dark and Lonely in particular the locations: “IIshellasa Ice Forest” and “Syhl Shallow”. 😂

Are you a fan of the TV show F.R.I.E.N.D.S? And are you participating in this readathon? Let me in the comments!

Review ARC | Real Life Scandals: Admission

Disclaimer: Bear in mind that some of the links in this post are affiliate links and if you go through them to make a purchase I will earn a little commission at no extra cost from your end. 😊

I would to thank PRH Global for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts expressed are my personal opinion.

Description Summary | Despite having one of the most clueless MCs in YA, it is sadly a grim reflection to perhaps a big portion of the privileged rich kids. Makes a fantastic discussion book.

Rating

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

Book Summary | (Skip to Review)

Chloe Berringer, Wood Valley senior, Beverly Hills rich kid and the daughter of B-list celebrity and sit com star Missy from the show My Dad, My Pops, and Me is determined to finish off senior year with a flourish by finally graduating and heading to her dream college.

All that comes crashing down when the FBI arrives at Chloe’s home one startling morning, and Chloe’s life is altered completely.

Now thrown into the middle of a nationwide scandal (perhaps even worldwide) Chloe finds herself written out as the tyrannical villain in this cover story. And even though she may not have been directly responsible for the crime, her defined as being an “accomplice” forces her to reconcile and reexamine harsh truths of not only her crime but of her self as well.

This is a fictional account of the college admissions scandal that has erupted back in 2019.

Review
Review

Review

“Money makes you weak because it tricks you into thinking that you’re strong”.

This is exactly what this book is about. Of course I’m pretty sure the whole world knew about the admissions scandal because it does shed a garish light on privilege, corruption, and integrity of these so called “prestigious” institutions. Honestly this is one of the most important discussion books for teens, and is one book I would definitely recommend to be taught in high schools. There are so many themes that pop up that include, the education system, standardized testing, racism, entitlement, and of course wealth privilege.

Story

The story was a great spin on the real life scandal, and in the book we had a look at alternating chapters of pre-scandal Chloe and post scandal Chloe. I think this was a really unique way to see the shifting narratives, and contrary to other readers I didn’t feel like it was confusing or exhausting.

I wasn’t a fan of the romance though; it’s like having jello for dessert when you wanted that fudgy gooey chocolate brownie. I know this doesn’t make sense but roll with me 😂 It was an underselling in short. Levi was so vanilla compared to other YA love interests. (Okay I’ll stop with the food references).

Chloe

I cannot though with Chloe freaking Berringer. She is one of the most clueless human beings in existence it’s terrifyngly alarming. Oh yeah and she’s extremely lazy. And that’s excuse enough to not put in effort in her school work. Jeez I can’t with her I just can’t. Glad to know that the influencer rich kids L.A scene is not for me; lol what a nightmare truly.

If you think I was overrating her cluelessness just look at some of her dialogue from the book:

Mom is not going to jail for twenty years, you idiots. It was only a college application!”

“I don’t let myself dwell on it too much, anyway, because I don’t like the way it makes me feel something uncomfortable and unfamiliar; an uncertainty about my parents’ judgement”.

“Apparently,( it’s) a crime. That’s news to me”.

“Honestly I don’t even understand how my mom broke the law. Shady is different from illegal.”

The author tried really hard to make us readers sympathize with her, but ultimately I couldn’t. I may have felt sorry but whatever consequence and punishments that came out of this is justified and she deserves it. However making her the sole pariah I feel distracts that this is a systematic issue and instead turns it into another “celebrity scandal”. That’s what many tabloids tried to do with the original true story.

Isla (side character shout out!)

I loved Isla, and I was so happy that the author included someone who was fearless and righteous as she is. She said a lot of stuff that I personally wanted to say to Chloe and her parents, so what a relief to see her deliver the harsh truths of their crimes.

Do I recommend? Despite me not really clicking with the book, I 100% think it should still be read.

The Fantasy Winter Retreat Book Tag

I was tagged by the lovely @ursareads to do the winter holiday retreat tag! Had so much fun doing this and I linked up ursa’s post so do check it out!

This tag was created by Sumedha @ The Wordy Habitat and here’s the premise:

“you get to go on a week-long retreat to chill and have fun after the stressful 2020 experience. set the scene of your dream winter retreat and, using the prompts, round up the characters you’d like to vacation with!”

Step One: Travel destination and accomodation

I’m definitely the black sheep here because I’m taking every winter vacation stereotype and flushing it down the drain. My ideal winter retreat would be: no snow 😂

Yup you read that right. Not a fan of the cold slush crunching underneath your feet, not a fan of crusty lips, red nose, and blue fingers. And I’m certainly not a fan of freezing like an ice popsicle.

I wanted to choose a place warmer during the winter months and a destination I’ve never been to before. Thailand struck me as a lush paradise to escape to with so many historic sights and natural landscapes. They’ve got a vibrant culture that would be so much fun exploring!

Pic Source

I’ll be staying at a boutique hotel with a temple like style, surrounded by lush gardens and serene pools of crisp blue water. If I wanted a stay in I would chill at the hotel’s library, if I wanted to meditate a temple is not far off, and if I wanted a night out metropolitan Bangkok is just a drive away!

Pics sources: 1, 2, 3, 4

Step Two: Who’s Joining!?

With that let’s dive into the prompts to see who will be making it to this fabulous unusual winter retreat ✨💃🏽

A fun character who’s presence would cheer up any situation

Nikolai Lanstov Grishaverse Trilogy

Nikolai has always been the life of the party so if there’s anyone who would cheer us up with their ridiculous jokes and silly self it’s Nikolai for sure!

Couldn’t find the link to this fan art but do mention the artist if you know who they are!
A character who would parent everyone

Hermione Granger Harry Potter series

Hermione is definitely the one who planned the itinerary , bought a couple of books on Thai history and culture with her, and is the one who manages to remind Nikolai not to forget his passport.

A character who would plan games and other activities

Legend – Caraval

The master himself! Legend I feel would be a pain if we tried to play hide and seek but there’s no one better when it comes to games and puzzles.

A character who would rather cozy up in blankets and sleep/laze around all day

Lazlo Strange – Strange the Dreamer

I had to include my fictional spirit animal! Lazlo would prefer to sit out in the gardens book in hand, and a steamy cup of tea in the other.

A character who had to cancel other plans to be here

Hades – Lore Olympus

The King of the Underworld had to be dragged by Hermes to get to this trip but everyone agreed he needed time off. I mean the dead aren’t going anywhere right?

Also we had to tell him not to get the three headed dog because the last thing this year needs is a sighting of a mythical monster roaming the streets.

Original art: Lore Olympus webtoon
A character who bought their work along with them

Pippa – A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder

Pippa is your definition of workaholic, she has a special suitcase with all of her logs and an actual pin up board to keep track of her investigations. Hermione is particularly impressed and Hades is annoyed that he didn’t get his own paperwork.

A character who would not leave their partner’s side

Lorcan Salvaterre – TOG

Over protective Lorcan will basically pick up a fight (and put up a punch) with anyone who tries one with Elide. Elide though is the only one who keeps him on a leash. They manage to have a side gig by juggling at the corner of the street market!

A character who is amused by everyone’s antics

Kell – A Darker Shade of Magic

Why do I feel that Kell’s default face is amused? Kell has not seen this part of the world and is even more amused by his fellow travel partners.

Lila specifically requested a set of Dhaab Thai swords because she’s Lila and a souvenir post card won’t cut it. Nikolai reminds Kell of his brother Rhys, and is actually disturbed of how annoying both of them are.

TTT | Top ARCs I Would Love to Get Approved For

Right so this week’s TTT was also based on Christmas with the theme of “what books I wish Santa would bring?” and like I said I don’t celebrate Christmas but I switched Santa with the publishing industry because they’re bookish Santa 😂 and I would love to have these ARCs approved for so if you’re a publisher and you’re seeing this, can you make someone’s bookish wish come true? ahem ahem..

Anyways! So I’ve listed top ARCs I would love to get approved for by publishers!

TTT is a fun bookish weekly meme created by theartsyreadergirl where you list your top 10s based on a different theme each week. I’ll link up her TTT if you would like to participate or know more.

*Disclaimer: I have an affiliate link to the books mentioned in the post, at no extra cost if you decide to buy via the link, your book blogger here gets a commission 😊

Top ARCs I Would Love to Get Approved For

Fat Chance, Charlie Vega by Crystal Maldonado

I’m pretty excited for this, it’s a coming of age book that tackles our relationships to our family, bodies, and cultures. It follows Charlie as she catches the eye of Brian her classmate but she soon finds out that Brian intended to ask her skinny athletic best friend initially. Is Charlie his second choice? Was Charlie ever a choice?

The Gilded Ones by Namina Forna

This cover has definitely popped up once or twice on my blog but the story matches up that gorgeous cover. After a blood ceremony reveals 17 year old Deka’s “impurity” she is sent to fight for the emperor in an army of girls just like her. This epic high fantasy has magical powers, immortality, and kick ass heroines.

Concrete Rose by Angie Thomas

I raved about The Hate U Give in my review and this book easily became one of my favorites this year so when I found out there was going to be a prequel I was ecstatic! The prequel follows Starr’s father in his teen years as Thomas weaves a tale of Black boyhood and manhood, and what it is to be a “man”.

Teen Titans : Beast Boy Loves Raven by Kami Garcia

One of my favorite ships have sailed!! Yesss!! You bet I’ll pick up this one 😍

The Thursday Murder Club 2 by Richard Osman

The Thursday Murder Club is one of my favorite reads this year (like easily top 5), so I cannot wait till the gang get back together because there is nothing better than a couple of retired sassy British pensioners using their retirement solving cold blooded homicides.

Yolk by Mary H.K. Choi

The synopsis really gripped me in this one, estranged sisters, the comparability that comes when you’re measuring the success around you to your own shortcomings, and battling an eating disorder. I’ve heard mixed reviews of Choi’s writing but I have a good feeling about this one.

Hana Khan Carries On by Uzma Jalaluddin

Hana waitresses part time at Three Sisters Biryani Poutine, the only halal restaurant in the neighborhood. But things take a turn when an upscale restaurant opens in the same area, to make matters worst a hate attack complicates matters further. And of course there is the growing attraction between Hana and Aydin, the young owner of the rival restaurant. Food and enemies to lovers? Sold.

Last Chance Books by Kelsey Rodkey

This is a rom com with an enemies to lovers trope where Madeleine an owner of a long standing family owned bookstore gets into a rivalry when a chain bookstore opens across the street and threatens to shut them down. Jesper the employee who works there is not making life any easier.

Rule of Wolves by Leigh Bardugo

While King of Scars admittedly was a bit disheartening, I stan anything Nikolai Lanstov so bring on the heartbreak and the emotional tsunami.

Clues to the Universe by Christina Li

This has a found family trope and it’s about two science class partners who become unlikely friends with their mutual love of NASA, rockets, and space. It deals heavily about fathers; those who left us, those who abandoned us, and those who never bothered to be there.

One last thing, If you haven’t heard there’s this new “version” of COVID. To my readers and bloggers residing in UK and Europe my heart goes out to all of you. It’s devastating to welcome a new year with a lockdown, and I can’t imagine how that feels. Sending you good vibes and positive energy to wherever you are ✨🙏🏼

Thanks for reading! Do you have any books you wish you’d get an ARC for? Have you got an ARC for any of these books?
