Pairing Books with Tea! | Finding the Perfect Cuppa

This is inspired by a post I’ve read a while back, and while I’m pretty sure I saved the post to reference back to it later WordPress is adamant I haven’t saved anything…oh well 🙂

I feel so bad for not remembering the blog or the post, but because I saw this a while back and have a memory of a scatterbrain mouse I can’t place a name to it. Ultimately I don’t take credit for this idea.

I’ve been getting more and more into tea recently especially the flavored ones because there are so many variations and so many pairings. I was an aggressive anti-tea drinker but I’m so happy I gave other options a go because now I can’t imagine not having a cup of tea once and a while. Still can’t handle the taste of black tea though.

Best yet, all of the teas mentioned here are from independent businesses and makers who personally source their teas ethically from the farmers!

Motherhood Tea Blend

Book Choice: Dancing at the Pity Party by Tyler Feder

Tea Type: Caffeine free, herbal, medicinal

Seller: The Singing Leaf

This memoir in the form of a graphic novel tackles the most heavy part of motherhood: the grief of losing one’s mother and the unavoidable void that follows after. Although the tea is designed for new mothers I can’t help but put these two together

TW: Death, loss of a parent.

Spiced Pumpkin Pie Chai

Book Choice: Pumpkinheads by Rainbow Rowell

Tea Type: Seasonal, flavor teas

Seller: Bird and Blend

The title speaks for itself and a cute read deserves a sip from something gut warming and cozy. Also, I know its not October anymore but who cares!?

Side note: Bird and Blend have a “Cheer Me Up” Tea gift box designed to lift up your spirits during these troubling times. Order one, treat yourselves.

TW: One body shaming comment

Oriental Premium Beauty

Book Choice: If I Had Your Face by Frances Cha

Tea Type: Oolong teas

Seller: T Shop

I really focused on the word “Beauty” here. The tea is handpicked oolong with orange blossoms and honey taste notes.

If I Had Your Face takes the concept of beauty quite literally with a look on the very high beauty standards ingrained in Korean culture. Hence I thought it tied nicely with the book.

TW: violence, abuse, assault

Dragon Pearls

Book Choice: The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang

Tea Type: Low Caffeine, green teas

Seller: Camellia Sinensis

Apart from the majestic sounding tea title, The Poppy War features grimdark fantasy and ruthless brutality so it’s no wonder that the legendary yet monstrous creature is befitting to the book.

The buds or “small pearls” unfold themselves when you pour hot water, so that’s a sight to see!

TW: Drug abuse, self harm, suicide, blood, animal cruelty, rape, sexual assault, torture, physical and mental abuse.

Ceylon Orange Pekoe

Book Choice: A Cuban’s Girl’s Guide to Tea and Tomorrow by Laura Taylor Namely

Tea Type: Black teas, traditional teas

Seller: In Pursuit of Tea

This tea is classified as “classic British”, with hints of citron, baked goods, nutty walnut notes.

Lela is a baker who’s whisked away to the British countryside for a rested vacation, I can’t help but think this may be her new favorite!

TW: Deals with a grandmother’s death

Tsutsuji Sencha

Book Choice: Tokyo Ever After by Emiko Jean

Tea Type: Green teas, premium

Seller: Kettl

Sencha is probably the most popular Japanese green tea. This particular blend is handpicked and is all about being refined and sophisticated. Quite similar to where our protagonist Izumi finds herself when she discovers she’s a long lost princess of Japan. (The Princess Diaries anyone?)

TW: None to mention

Royal Courtesan

Book Choice: The Cruel Prince by Holly Black

Tea Type: Oolong teas, seasonal

Seller: Te Company

This tea blend combines the fragrant notes of roses and the sweetness of grape and honey. I can’t help but think back to the wild faerie courts in Black’s The Folk of Air series. Plus the title really fits Jude Duarte as she finds herself thrust into the viperous court of Elfhame.

TW: Murder, physical and mental abuse, violence

Ruby

Book Choice: A Sisterhood of Secret Ambitions by Sheena Boekweg

Tea Type: Oolong teas, red teas

Seller: Song Tea & Ceramics

Ruby is a rich complex blend that features a fruity sweetness and yet a tropical tanginess to it. Ruby is all about balancing between the rich and sweet, not too strong and not too sweet, which in turn reminds me heavily of the sisterhood featured in Boekweg’s book whom rely on matchmaking and tea parties to achieve its purpose.

TW: None to mention

Chamomile Flower Infusion

Book Choice: Dairy of a Young Naturalist by Dara McAnulty

Tea Type: Caffeine free, herbal teas

Seller: Teatulia

Chamomile is one of the most relaxing types of tea. It’s calming nature is often associated with nature and serenity. Teatulia’s blend promises the aroma of “fresh flower meadows”.

So it is not strange that I have chosen Diary of a Young Naturalist, written by 14 year old (Yes 14!!) autistic writer and naturalist Dara in which he shares how he sees the world through his connection to wildlife via diary entries.

TW: None to mention

This was so much fun to do! Any teas or books caught your eye? What type of teas do you like?

As always follow to not miss the latest!

    1. Thank you so much! A lot of bloggers and readers here are heavy coffee drinkers, and since I am too I definitely wanted to shed a light on tea especially since these couple of months I’ve been experiencing different flavors and kinds and I’m really enjoying them!
